I'm looking to sell my laptop and purchase a desktop PC, I heard custom building is the way to go for good price. I'm not really up on the technical side of things, like what's good and what's not.

I'm looking to sell this HP Pavillion zv6000:

# AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz processor
# 1GB of PC2700 RAM
# 128MB ATI Xpress 200m video (dedicated memory)
# 8x Dual Layer DVD+/-RW drive
# 15.4\" wide screen BrightView
# 100GB Hard-Drive
# Multi-card reader
# Complete with minor cosmetic damage for uniqueness XD

Though, I'm not sure how much to sell it for. This is going to be a hefty chunk of my budget, I'm willing to spend £150-200 on top of it.

I'd like this PC to be able to play new games, not necessarily maxed, but I'd like them to run smoothly.

So if you guys and girls be absolutely awesome and do the following for me...you will be smexy.:

a) Evaluate my laptop and recommend me a price to sell it at (and maybe where... eBay?)
b) Spec out a new system for me

Oh, and this needs to come with Windows, Keyboard, monitor(17\" TFT please) etc.

I await your replies!

Dan

Ok, screw it.

I kinda need my files on my laptop so I can't sell it until I have my PC up and running.

Let's see what yu can do XD.

AMD preferably, and I'm happy with Home edition... if that's what you mean :S

Unless there's a considerable difference between Home and Professional.

As I said I'm not the biggest tchie when it comes to computer parts.

I trust your guy's knowledge.... my PC is in your hands. Haha.

I'll happily take intel if it's better. I was just told that AMD was 'the best'

I reckon your looking at around £400 for your laptop.
_ _ _ _

Maybe try selling the laptop without the Windows XP Code, and using that on your new system?

Depends on the screen. I'd say about £400 - £500 for max res of 1280x800, or £650 - £750 for 1680x1050.

Thanks for all your replies so far.

How do I determine the mazimum resolution of my screen?

Thanks Dan

A couple of questions:

How well wll this do with games like Company of Heroes, COD2 and newer games like that?

How many USB ports will his have? and what determines the amount.

Does the mobo have an onboard network card, with erthernet?

Once again thanks for your replies!

Okay cant post much since im at work and internet is being really slow :(

it will have onboard ethernet yes!

it will perform quite well on those games, probably medium settings wouldrun smooth and nice

but maxed might cause some problems

if you put £150 towards it and get another 1GB ram and a 7800 or 7900 :) then it wil be the next best thing for ur budget and before dx10

£106.64 1
ASUS M2N-E nF570 Socket AM2 PCI-E / Gb LAN / DUAL CH DDR2 / SATA(II) RAID / 7.1CH AUDIO / RAID / ATX MOTHERBOARD
£54.45 1
Aspire Discovery Black No psu 4 x 5.25\" / 2 x 3.5\" / 4x3.5 Standard ATX / Baby AT / Micro ATX Front Usb 2.0 and Firewire 2x
£52.00 1
Crucial 1GB DDR2 PC4200 240-PIN CT12864AA53E x2
£69.95 2
250GB Western Digital - WD2500JS
£44.95 1
XFX GeForce 7600GT 256MB PCI-E 28-bit GDDR3 Mfr# PVT73GUGE3
£91.58 1
600W Super Silent ATX Power Supply 12cm Quiet Cooling, 20+4 ATX Connector for 100% Motherboard Compatibility & SATA Connector!
£14.90 1
LiteOn 16x DL DVD-RW+RAM Black
£15.95
Dell 17\" flat TFT monitor 1704FPTs D/G Grade A 30-day warranty
£99.00 1
Microsoft Comfort Curve Desktop P/N B2L-00045

750-ish total, inc VAT

I wanted a dual core processor for multi tasking. Is this a good idea or will it be better with a single core and upgrading the graphics card instead?

^^what he said...

:)

In my opinion, the PSU is one of the most important bits to consider. After all, its the bit that actually powers the whole computer!

Yes that looks ok is that in your budget don’t for get to add vat + OS
I would re think about the Dell 17\" flat TFT monitor 1704FPTs D/G Grade a 30-day warranty it’s a lot of money to pay out for only a 30-day warranty.
Think I may be tempted to drop the CPU down a bit and get a better graphics card

£15 on a psu for that system, YOU MUST BE MAD  ok its not that powerful a spec but even so the only thing i would use that psu for is a paper weight i would NEVER let a psu like that anywhere near a resonable specced pc, such as you have lined up.

Here these will do just PERFICK 8)

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=24663

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=24282

Both decent brands and one normal one modular if you prefer that kind of thing.

If these are too expensive then these are supposed to be ok

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=19869

If you go with your original choice don't come crying to us when it dies and takes out half of your nice shiney new pc with it, melodramatic i know but that does happen when you try and run a decent pc on a naff cheap and nasty psu.

hehe....tbh I dont really understand why we should get an expensive psu? I mean thats what my friend told me too so i did get an expensive psu.
http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=21014

other then it looks nice and shinny with some massive box with it, dont really see much difference, aint it the more watts the better? :P

also the description says \"Newest ATX 2.2 with 2 x 12V connection\" does that mean i should get 2x 4pin plug for my mobo? I only got 1x 4 pin plug

Well lets put it this way below is a pic i took of a psu that was removed from a dead pc at work, some numpty had fitted a qtec psu, renownd for dieing. Now look at the power rating alledgedly (sp?) 550w. This is the PEAK output this psu will supply, ie for a VERY short time, now look athe current ratings of the psu, with the exception of the 5v rail the peak rating is between 2/3 and 1/2 the MAX rating now if we work out the max rating of this psu it comes in at just over 400watt and tbh i seriously doubt it will last long at that kind of power. Also alot of these psu's just don't carry the protection that \"expensive\" psu's do ie overload protection, over volt protection, short circuit protection. All of which would cause serious damage to your pc but a decent psu would just shut down in any of the above circumstances.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/mac124/DSC00023.jpg

End of the day its your money, your pc so you must buy whichever you choose. All we can do is offer advice and my advice is buy the best psu you can afford as it is the \"engine\" if you like that powers your pc have an underpowered engine and your pc will be at best unstable and at worst it will all go up in smoke as the psu fails to regulate the power rails and overvolts everything
