Attempt 2

how do you do this, my camera will take the appropriate 3 shots. I have looked into it and it seems like a lot of messing about making "masks" and stuff, hardley seems worth it tbh.
Take one shot under exposed, one over exposed, then download photomatrix and import the 3 images, and it does the rest... I tried it but it didnt quite work for me :(

Maybe I need to do some work on it on my desktop

a lot easier than I thought, most cameras have a "bracketing" mode which takes 3 shots in short succession. In the advanced settings I can set the bracketing to do a -2 EV a normal and a +2 EV (basically dark, normal and light exposure)
if you don't have bracketing using a tripod you can take 1st shot with -2 exposure, change to normal take 2nd shot, then +2 for 3rd shot. I tried it manually and can be done in under 30 seconds :)
I'm rather impressed with the second attempt and how it came out

have you tried doing the Tone Mapping after the HDR bit? loads of tweakage available in there
Looks really professional, like official photos from vw for the passat.

I feel my HDR shots may well be being eclipsed now...
I need to find some cityscapes.. That one is brilliant, biodoid..

A quick mess around with a photo and layer effects :)
been for a walk in Edale again today and got some possible good 3 photo sets for some HDR coming soon this week LOL

Grass looks good in that one - shame the clouds look a bit less than real though..
What settings do you use, by the way? Camera and Photomatix? Or do you just experiment?
Was a really grey day so didn't get much detail in the clouds.
I use the lowest aperture my camera allows F/8 which gives a lot of detail in the distance (hence the grass etc) on higher apertures (lower F numbers :S, eg. F/2.8 there isn't much background detail but its good for super macro shots with good depth of field.
I hadnt thought of playing with aperture.. I'll try it sometime. What camera do you use, anyway?
Fuji S6500

x10 optical zoom, SLR feel to it, overall well impressed.
Only downside to using low Aperture mode is you need a tripod or somewhere sturdy to put the camera (i use 2 second delay on shutter so I don't nudge it and normally a random fence post to sit camera)
I normally stick mine on a tripod and use a 2 sec delay too.. Seems to work the best! The only annoying thing about my camera is that it will only do bracketted shots at +/-1. So to get decent shots for HDR, I have to set the exposure manually.
yeah i realised that mine only does +/-1 on autobracket when the pics all didn't seem too different in terms of exposure DOH. Theres an exposure button on top of camera so it takes less than 5 seconds to adjust it :D
wish there was a firmware update to adjust it though or a way to get into the registry and tweak it LOL
Yeah. likewise - pretty much the same on mine, except the button is on the back :D
although i've heard if I shoot in RAW a single shot is good enough to tone map to the same affect as HDR!
I was reading about that last night actually! People were saying that doing it from a single RAW image doesnt make it a 'true' HDR, as its an approxomation done by the program in the processing stage, rather than actual exposures. But i think that if you're pleased with the end result, then job's a goodun :D
I was going to try shooting at different exposures in RAW mode, and see what that does. And I can also set my camera to shoot a double shot at the same time, and save both a RAW image and a jpeg of the same shot. Was going to try different exposures on that setting and see if there was a difference!
Some say a tonemapped RAW shot although not true HDR looks better in terms of an overall WOW factor
Yeah - i've not tried it, but I'll be interested to see what it comes out like!
Get yourselves a real camera :P dSLR its the only way to go :P
what are the benefits? in laymans terms.
can do bracketing at -2 to +2 :)
and you can get lenses like this

Well the bracketing +2 -2 is certainly a winner, but hard to justifty an extra £200 when in less than a minute I can do it on manual on the Fuji ;)
then theres increased rapid shots, external flashes, remote control via usb, interchangeable lenses, battery grips etc etc... and also bulb mode which lets you keep the shutter up for as long as you want :)
Is bulb mode the same as me doing a long exposure on mine? eg using a 30 second shutter speed for night shots
but this is longer than 30 secs... you can run it for hours but batteries will probably die
Get yourselves a real camera :P dSLR its the only way to go :P
then theres increased rapid shots, - I havent found a use for one more rapid than mine yet.. Not sure how many it is, but I think its probably around 3-4/sec.. I wouldnt complain if it could do more tho! :D
external flashes, - That would be useful, but I have the option of changing the brightness of the built in flash, which compensates a bit.
remote control via usb, - What would you need that for?
interchangeable lenses, - Mine has a 35mm equiv of 28-504 so i've yet to find a need for a different zoom as such. And I can put different filters on it using the lens adaptor and also fit extra lenses for extended zoom, fish eye etc etc.
battery grips etc etc... - dont know what that is
and also bulb mode which lets you keep the shutter up for as long as you want :) - again, on mine, I havent found a use for longer than a 90sec exposure, but I guess the option would be nice. I'm sure i'm now going to wish I could have a 2min exposure tonight
Although, I can't compete with this...

WTF??? Is that a BFG uhh BFC or what?
My thoughts
then theres increased rapid shots,- "The FinePix S6500fd also features a High Speed Shooting Mode with rapid focus and a shutter lag of just 0.035 seconds. " fast enough for me
external flashes, - not keen on using flash, like to use natural light where available, with long exposures indoors where needed.
remote control via usb,- eh, no use :|
interchangeable lenses, "class-leading ISO 100-3200 sensitivity and Fujinon 10.7x (28-300mm equivalent) optical zoom lens, the FinePix S6500fd combines the photographic possibilities of a digital SLR with the ease of use of a compact." - thats fine for everything all in one lens :)
... and "The FinePix S6500fd’s optional Wide Conversion Lens, WL-FXS6, expands the camera’s wide-angle capability without compromising image quality. It allows the extreme angles of view normally only available with changeable lenses on an SLR camera."
battery grips etc etc. "The Fujifilm Finepix S6500fd has similar dimensions and weight to a DSLR, as well as a very chunky, sculpted hand-grip"
.. and also bulb mode which lets you keep the shutter up for as long as you want :) - never had need to use more than 30 seconds
i'm going to need some more convincing to upgrade, convince me
GET ONE!!! Good enough?
Or do i have to threaten to take away your beloved 260??? Hmmm...? Whats it gonna be coiler
